MacLean Nets Winner as Women’s Soccer Beats Bona in OT

OLEAN, NY – Freshman Maia MacLean scored the golden goal in the 99th minute to lift Niagara (5-1-0) over Big 4 rival St. Bonaventure, 3-2, Sunday evening in non-conference women's soccer action from Olean, N.Y.

Game Recap
• It took no time for the Niagara attack to find the back of the net as Emma Bough found the head of Emma Davies in the fourth minute of action, giving the Purple Eagles a 1-0 lead.
• Following a Bonaventure yellow card in the box, Niagara's Alexis Horwedel beat the Bonnies keeper, Chiara Gottinger, on the penalty kick to make the score 2-0.
• The Purple Eagles controlled possession in the first half, recording nine shots, compared to two for Bonaventure.
• St. Bonaventure (2-3-3) had a goal taken off the board after being called offside in the 56th minute.
• The Bonnies would score back-to-back goals in the 64th and 66th minute of play to tie the game at 2-2.
Mackenzie Mix nearly scored the game-winner with five minutes remaining as she sent the ball toward the net off the free-kick, but Gottinger made the diving save.
• Moments later, Bough found herself behind the Bonnies backline, but her shot went wide left.
• The game would remain tied, 2-2, at the end of regulation.
• MacLean scored the game-winner in the 99th minute to give Niagara its fifth win of the season.

Niagara Notes
• Niagara improves to 4-0 when scoring the first goal of a match.
Clara Bornet got the start in goal for Niagara, making three saves and earning her second win of the season.
• Horwedel has recorded a goal in back-to-back games and now has four goals in her career.
• Davies' goal in the fourth minute was her first as a Purple Eagle. The St. Catherines, Ontario, product also picked up her fourth assist on the season on the games' final goal.
• Bough moved into second on the team in assists with five after recording two in Sunday's win.
• For head coach Peter Veltri it is his 198th win at the helm of the Purple Eagles women's soccer program.
• The last time Niagara won in OT was against St. Bonaventure in 2018, a 1-0 win for the Purple Eagles.
