Women's Soccer Upsets Syracuse

Junior Florence Vaillancourt recorded her first career hat trick to lead Niagara to the upset win over Syracuse  in non-conference action from Syracuse, N.Y.

Game Recap
  • Syracuse scored the games first goal five minutes into the contest when Meghan Root got one past Niagara's Felicia Grufman.
  • Niagara would even up the score in the 23rd-minute when Annie Ibey found Vaillancourt with a cross near the back post.
  • Vaillancourt would score her second goal of the game moments later. This time Emma Bough found the forward on the right side for the goal.
  • After surrendering the goal early in the contest,  Grufman made three of her six saves in the first-half.
  • Vaillancourt would score her third goal of the contest in the 59th-minute of the contest. Ashley LoFranco was credited with the helper.
  • The Purple Eagles fourth goal of the contest was scored by last year's leading goal scorer, Djeynaba Thaim. Thaim got past her defender and slotted it past the Syracuse keeper on the right side.
  • The Orange would get one back in the final minute of the match to make the final score 4-2.

Game Notes
  • Niagara moved to 2-1-1 against Syracuse all-time, while extending their unbeaten streak over the Orange to three games. 
  • The hat trick for Vaillancourt was the first of her career. She now has four goals this season, also a career-high for the junior.
  • Grufman, who made her first career start, finished the contest with six saves.
  • Niagara's defense stood tall against the Syracuse attack. The Orange finished the game with 20 shots and nine corners.

Up Next
  • The Purple Eagles will play their first home game of the season on Sunday when they welcome Saint Francis (Pa.) to Niagara Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. and will be the first game of a Niagara soccer double-header.
