Softball Shuts Out Canisius To Conclude Season

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles closed out the 2021 season with a doubleheader split versus crosstown rival Canisius.

Game Recap
  • A solo homerun from the Griffs in the top of the first inning gave them a 1-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • In the bottom of the second, with bases loaded, Jaden Swiatek reached base on an error to score Riley Crum and Samantha Hare then scored on the throw. An RBI groundout from Maggie Vesneske plated Kaity McInall and put the Purple Eagles in the lead, 3-1.
  • An RBI single from Rachel Funk in the bottom of the third extended Niagara's lead, 4-1.
  • Canisius scored one run in the fourth to half NU's lead, 4-2.
  • The Griffs reclaimed the lead, 5-4, in the top of the fifth after a two-RBI homerun and a solo homerun.
  • Canisius homered again in the sixth and held Niagara off in the seventh to win game one, 6-4.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Kelsey Harrigan led the Purple Eagles at the plate with two hits. She also had one stolen base.
  • Crum (7-8) took the loss. She struck out three and allowed five earned runs and seven hits in 5.0 innings pitched.

Game Recap
  • Game two was a defensive battle between the Purple Eagles and the Golden Griffins, with each team finishing with five hits each.
  • In the bottom of the third inning, Harrigan smacked a homerun over the field in left center, giving the Purple Eagles a 1-0 lead over the Griffs.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Samantha Hare singled up the middle, scoring Crum to put NU ahead, 2-0.
  • The Purple Eagles held the Griffs scoreless, earning their only shutout win of the season.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Crum and Hare led Niagara with two hits each.
  • Julia Thompson (4-5) picked up the complete game win in the circle. She struck out a career-high six batters while allowing just five hits.
