Purple Eagles Fall To The Hawks In MAAC Tournament

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara's men's soccer team fell to Monmouth, 2-1, in the quarterfinal round of the MAAC Tournament on Sunday.

Game Recap
  • Niagara had two good chances on shots from Rodrigo Almeida and Luigi Boa Morte in the first 12 minutes of the first period, but both were saved by the Hawks' keeper.
  • In the 19th minute, following a red card on one of the Hawks, the Purple Eagles earned a penalty kick. The Monmouth keeper was drawn to the opposite side of the net, and Federico Cugge scored, giving Niagara a 1-0 lead over Monmouth.
  • Stephen Hasse had a chance in the 40th minute, but it was saved by the Monmouth goalie at the top of the net. The Purple Eagles, however, remained in the lead, 1-0, going into halftime.
  • In the 58th minute, the Hawks scored the equalizer and just over one and a half minutes later, Monmouth scored again to take the lead, 2-1.
  • The Purple Eagles continued to create scoring opportunities. A shot on goal from Nuukele Gboe in the 72nd minute almost found its target, but was saved by Monmouth.
  • Rodrigo Almeida and Jacob Myer took shots in the final minutes of the game, but neither found their mark and the Purple Eagles fell to the Hawks, 2-1.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Hasse, Boa Morte, Almeida. Gboe and Kevin Payne led the Purple Eagles with three shots each.
  • Josh Savoni (5-3) played all 90 minutes in net and made five saves.
  • The Purple Eagles outshot the Hawks, 23-13, and also held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
