Niagara Holds On to Beat Cornell

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – Three Purple Eagles recorded double-digit scoring numbers, led by Angel Parker with 18 points en route to a 76-71 win over visiting Cornell Saturday afternoon at the Gallagher Center. Maddy Yelle and Lore Porter added 12 and 11 points, respectively to help Niagara defeat the visiting Big Red. 

Game Recap
First Quarter
• With Cornell up 6-4, the Purple Eagles exploded for an 11-0 run over the next three minutes of game time to make the score 15-6. 
• The Big Red would come back and tie the game at 15-15 with 1:01 remaining in the opening frame. 
Angel Parker would hit a 3-pointer with 31 seconds left on the clock, giving the Purple and White an 18-15 lead. 
• The Purple Eagles would take a 20-17 lead into the second quarter.

Second Quarter
• After Parker's 3-pointer at the end of the first, Niagara outscored Cornell 25-10 over the next 10-minutes of game time and gave the Purple Eagles a 40-25 lead over the visitors.
• Parker scored 13 points during Niagara's best offensive stretch. 
• As a team, Niagara went 9-for-24 from the field during the stretch, including three 3-pointers. 
• Niagara's largest lead of the first half came in the second quarter – a 16-point advantage with 51 seconds left in the stanza.
• In the first half, Niagara forced 25 Cornell turnovers, resulting in 23 points for Niagara. 

Third Quarter
• Cornell started the third quarter with an 8-2 run to cut the Niagara lead down to eight, 42-34.  
• Niagara wouldn't let the Big Red get any closer as it built its lead back up, this time going up by as much as 17, 55-38, at the 3:10 mark of the period. 
• Cornell would chip away at the lead over the final three minutes of the quarter, making the score 59-45 heading into the last 10-minutes of action. 

Fourth Quarter
• At the 5:35 mark of the fourth, Niagara had once again built its lead to 16 points, 69-53.
• From there, Cornell would go on a 12-1 run to pull within four points, 71-67, with 56 seconds remaining. 
• Niagara would hold on, going 4-for-6 from the line in the final minute of play and earn the 76-71 win.

Niagara Notes
• For the first time under head coach Jada Pierce the Purple Eagles are 3-0 at home to start the season. 
• The 20 points scored in the first quarter were a season-high for the Purple Eagles. 
Lore Porter matched her season-high of 11 points, going 4-for-9 from the floor, including 3-for-7 from behind the arc. 
• Parker now has six games with five or more assists after collecting seven helpers this afternoon. 
Maddy Yelle reached double-digits for the fifth time this season. She and Angel are the only two Purple Eagles to have five or more games of 10-plus. 
Aaliyah Parker led Niagara with seven boards, followed by Olivia Mason with six. 
• As a team, Niagara shot 37.7 from the field, 30.4 from behind the arc, and 73.9 percent from the charity stripe.

Niagara will conclude its non-conference slate with a trip to Cincinnati, Ohio, to take on Xavier on Wednesday, Dec. 8.
