Purple Eagles Fall To Fairfield In MAAC Quarterfinals

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – No. 3 Niagara (8-10-0, 6-4-0 MAAC) fell to No. 6 Fairfield (7-8-2, 5-4-1 MAAC), 2-0, in the quarterfinals of the MAAC Tournament on Sunday.

Game Recap
  • The Stags scored in the fifth minute of play to take a 1-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • Emmanuel Obiefuna had the first opportunity of the game for NU in the 30th minute, but his shot was saved in the bottom center of the net by the Fairfield keeper.
  • Rodrigo Almeida had another chance for Niagara a few minutes before the end of the first half, but it didn't make it past the Stags' goalie and NU trailed, 1-0, going into halftime.
  • Gabriel Mikina and Jelldrik Dallmann had chances for Niagara in the first 15 minutes of the second half, but neither shot found its mark.
  • In the 79th minute, Fairfield scored again to extend its lead, 2-0.
  • Almeida had the final opportunity of the game for Niagara, but it was saved and the Purple Eagles were defeated by the Stags, 2-0.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Dallmann finished the season leading the NCAA in goals per game (1.08) and points per game (2.23). He was the first Purple Eagle since the 1970's to score 14 goals in a season.
  • Almeida had a team-high two shots on goal.
  • Luigi Boa Morte had a team-high three shots, while Ali Alomari, Dallmann, Almeida and Mikina each had two.
  • Josh Savoni (5-5-0) made three saves.
