NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. -  The Purple Eagles defeated No. 7 Clarkson by the final score 4-1 at Dwyer Arena Wednesday night in non-conference men's ice hockey action.
 
GAME RECAP
1st Period
  • Junior Ryan Cox opened the scoring with his first goal of the season 13:18 into the contest as he drove the puck past the Clarkson keeper.
  • Toronto, Ontario native Jason Pineo would make it 2-0 in favor of the Purple Eagles moments later. He took the feed from linemate Carter Randklev and deposited it past the goalie for the score.
  • Niagara put 15 of its 18 shots on net in the first period and won 13 of the 19 face-offs.
 
2nd Period
  • Niagara made it 3-0 in the second period of action when redshirt-senior Jack Billings corralled a pass from Stedlund and rifled the shot past Oldham. Croix Evingson was also credited with an assist on the tally.
  • Clarkson would get one back late in the third period when Jordan Power scored on the power play with just over three and a half minutes remaining.
  • Niagara goalie Mike Corson recorded 11 of his 23 saves in the game during the second period of play.
 
3rd Period
  • Both teams traded opportunities in the third and final period of play before Niagara's Randklev scored an insurance goal to give the Purple Eagles a three-goal advantage with four minutes remaining.
  • Ryan Naumovski and Brandon Stanley added their names to the stat sheet on the final goal as the linemates were credit with the assist.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Niagara's win over No. 7 Clarkson was the program's first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since Feb. 16, 2020, when the Purple Eagles defeated Sacred Heart, 6-1.
  • The Purple Eagles earned their first win in the series in six meetings.
  • Corson, who made his debut for the Purple and White, recorded a career-high 23 saves.
  • Cox, Pineo, Billings, and Randklev recorded their first goals of the season in the win.
  • Niagara recorded 20 blocked shots on the night, compared to just nine for the Golden Knights.
