Selena Mangoni's solo effort provided the game-winning goal as the Purple Eagles defeated the Iona Gaels, 1-0, on Saturday at Niagara Field.
SYNOPSIS
Playing at home for the first time in three weeks, the Purple Eagles dominated play but had little to show for it on the scoreboard. That changed in the 69
th minute when senior left back
Selena Mangoni collected the ball in Niagara's end of the field and dribbled up the field before unleashing a left-footed shot at the top of the box, which beat the keeper to the far post.
Sabrina Locas denied Iona's best scoring chance in the 86
th minute with a finger-tip save to preserve the shutout win.
MOMENTS
- 4' - Annie Ibey had the game's first scoring chance when her shot in the box was saved.
- 12' – After a turnover, Iona's Amber Crispin rounded the keeper and had a shot towards the goal, but Hadley Bucken was there to block the shot.
- 13' - Florence Vaillancourt finds Kelsey Araujo in the box, but her effort sails high.
- 15' – Bucken this time had her shot saved by the keeper and the ball ricochet off the crossbar.
- 22' - Ibey had a strong effort on goal denied by the keeper.
- 24' – After slick passing by Hailey Bicknell and Ibey around the box, Araujo's shot was saved.
- 39' - Sabrina Locas denied Lisette Palomo in the box.
- 55' – Iona's Kiera Haggerty had her shot saved by Locas.
- 69' (GOAL) – Selena Mangoni's solo run from the backline and then rips a shot from just outside of the box to the far post.
- 86 – Sabrina Locas's finger-tip save denies Iona's Samantha Hogan in the box.

- Selena Mangoni scored her second career goal as a Purple Eagle. Her first goal also came against Iona on Oct. 21, 2017.
- Annie Ibey had a season-high seven shots.
