DETROIT – The Niagara men's soccer team dropped its first game of the 2019 campaign by a 2-0 score Friday afternoon. The Purple Eagles hung right with host Detroit Mercy but two second half goal proved to be the deciding factor.
 
Match Moments

• 6' – Freshman goalie Josh Savoni was busy early, as the Titans earned three corner kicks in the opening seven minutes. In the sixth minute, Savoni denied Justin Schueneman's header for his first save of the match.
• 29' – After Jayson Repine had a shot blocked and Absalom Solorio-Villalpando sailed a ball high, Kyle Hofschneider took a shot of his own but had his effort blocked in front as well.
• 84' – Savoni made another stop with the score 2-0 Detroit Mercy as Jason Blackwell couldn't get enough juice to put the game out of reach.
• 87' – Solorio-Villalpando took a corner late to try and give Niagara some life. Ultimately the Purple Eagles did not convert.

• Head coach Bill Boyle: "Our team had a tough opponent today. I give a lot of credit to my friend Nick Deren, who has built a team of tough players all over the field that buy into their roles. We had some positives from our group and learned from the experience. It was a very good performance from our first-year goalkeeper Josh Savoni. Every game is a battle and I am sure that Detroit Mercy will be in contention in the Horizon. We look forward to our next challenge at Western Michigan University on Monday."
