NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara softball team earned its return to the postseason in convincing fashion on Saturday afternoon, taking the second game against Quinnipiac, 10-1, to earn the one win they required to reach the MAAC Softball Championship. After Marist defeated Canisius in the first game of their doubleheader, the Purple Eagles only needed to take one from the Bobcats to clinch their spot in next week's tournament.

Quinnipiac 3, Niagara 0
  • Sierra Bertrand and the Niagara defense started strong, retiring the Bobcats in order in the top of the first.
  • The Purple Eagles had a chance to take the lead in the fourth with runners on the corners, but couldn't score Bella Garone from third with just one out against.
  • Maggie Vesneske found herself 60 feet from home after a double and a throwing error from right field placed her at third. Ultimately the Bobcats got the third out to nullify the threat.
  • Vesneske led all Purple Eagles with three hits in four at-bats.
  • Bertrand went the full 7.0 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks while registering seven strikeouts.

Niagara 10, Quinnipiac 1
  • Jennifer Szilagyi had a blistering start to the game, fanning each of the first three batters she faced to strike out the side on just 13 pitches.
  • The offense came out equally hot, with each of the first six batters getting a hit to make it 3-0 with no outs against. Kelsey Harrigan opened with a single, Vesneske followed with a double, Maria Gabriele singled Harrigan home, Jerri Ann Orfano doubled Vesneske in, Watkins singled to get Orfano to third before both Orfano and Watkins scored on a double by Heather Haberman.
  • Quinnipiac opted to change pitchers after Haberman's at-bat, and the first batter she faced, Rachel Funk, walked to get the first seven runners on safely and was followed up by Jennifer Timm, who touched first on a fielder's choice. A single by Tara Driver made it nine in a row to get aboard and a walk by Gabriele put her on for the second time in the inning while also walking home Driver.
  • Another 1-2-3 inning in the second quickly turned things back over to the Niagara offense, who started the frame by facing their third pitcher of the game.
  • A leadoff double by Harrigan quickly turned into a run when Vesneske singled up the middle, allowing Harrigan to wheel around third and coast home, making it 8-1. A single through the right side by Watkins got Vesneske home from second base before Watkins scored from second on a whizzer by Haberman past the pitcher and into center, setting the score at 10-1 by inning's end.
  • Szilagyi went the full 5.0 innings, allowing just one run on five hits and a walk while striking out five.
  • Four Purple Eagles had multiple base hits, with Vesneske once again going 3-for-4 to lead the team. Harrigan also reached safely three times, going 2-for-2 with a walk. Haberman's three RBI led the team, as she went 2-for-3 from the plate.
