Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Ferocious Second Period Comeback Doesn't Hold For Purple Eagles

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Trailing by three early in the second period, the Niagara men's hockey team reeled off three straight goals before the intermission to pull even with Canisius on Saturday evening inside Dwyer Arena. The game went into overtime with the score still 3-3 before the Golden Griffins scored to push the playoff series to a third game.

Game Recap
  • With Canisius leading the Purple Eagles 2-0 late in the first, Niagara found itself with a golden chance to get on the board. Johnny Curran split two defenders for a breakaway but was stopped by the left pad of Matt Ladd.
  •  After the Golden Griffins made it 3-0 on a five-minute power play, Noah Delmas responded for the Purple Eagles with a power play goal of his own.
  • Two quick Canisius penalties gave Niagara a long 5-on-3 opportunity. The first penalty ended early when Justin Kendall scored to make it 3-2. Niagara converted on the second penalty as well, when Noah Delmas set up Ludwig Stenlund, who buried the fourth power play goal of the period to set the score at 3-3 right before the second period expired.
  • Brian Wilson made several heads-up plays in net as time wound down in the third to prevent Canisius from going ahead late.
  • Less than two minutes into overtime, Canisius came in on a rush and laid the puck into the crease. With the puck behind him and eking towards the goal line, Wilson spun and ripped the puck off the line before it crossed.

Beyond The Boxscore
  • Niagara and Canisius played to an extra frame for the fourth straight time. The teams tied in a regular season home-and-home series on February 22-23, then played for nearly 90 minutes and into a second overtime before Kendall gave the Purple Eagles the game one win.
