Second-Half Comeback Not Enough As NU Falls To Fairfield In MAAC Tournament First Round

ALBANY, N.Y. – Despite a strong second-half comeback, the Purple Eagles were defeated by the Fairfield Stags, 74-69, in the first round of the MAAC Tournament on Thursday.

Game Recap
  • Down 44-33 at the end of the first half, the Purple Eagles mounted an impressive second-half comeback. In the third quarter, four points from Adila Gathers and five from Emerald Ekpiteta helped cut the deficit to six, 48-42, with over six and a half minutes to play in the quarter. A trey from Maggie McIntyre with less than one minute left put Niagara down by just four points, 55-51, going into the fourth quarter.
  • Two free throws from Ekpiteta and another three from McIntyre put Niagara down by just one point, 57-56. A nifty bucket from Gathers followed, giving the Purple Eagles their first lead of the game, 58-57. Niagara and the Stags went back and forth and four points from Jai Moore kept Niagara ahead by one, 62-61. The Stags came back to take the lead, but a trey from Moore with 11 seconds left in the game put Niagara down by three, 70-67. The Stags, however, held on to win it, 74-69.
  • The Stags dominated for most of the first half of the game. Early in the first quarter, McIntyre sank a three to tie the score, 3-3. Moore added seven points for Niagara, leaving Niagara trailing by just four points, 14-10, with over five and a half minutes left in the quarter. The Stags, however, began to pull away in the remainder of the quarter and led the Purple Eagles, 27-14, going into the second quarter.
  • Two points from Gathers, six from Moore and four from Jordan Edwards put the Purple Eagles down by 10, 36-26, with 4:00 minutes left in the first half. Gathers added four more points and Ally Haar sank a trey at the buzzer. The Stags, however, led 44-33 going into halftime.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Moore led the Purple Eagles in scoring with 25 points. Moore scored in double figures in 26 games this season and scored 20 or more points in 13 games.
  • Gathers led the team in rebounding with seven boards. She also added 12 points.
  • McIntyre added 11 points for NU and Ekpiteta had 10 points.
  • Edwards dished out a team-high four assists.
  • Edwards and Moore led the team in steals with three each.
