Men’s Hockey Sweeps Mercyhurst

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara men's hockey team got a complete effort from the entirety of its lineup to earn a sweep of the Mercyhurst Lakers on Saturday evening. The Purple Eagles (10-12-3, 9-7-3 AHA) used three unanswered goals to take the lead over the visiting Lakers (11-13-2, 9-7-1 AHA), then held it thanks in part to eight third period saves from freshman Cole Weaver.

Game Recap
  • Midway through the first period, Ludwig Stenlund buried Niagara's first goal of the night on an assist from Chris Harpur and Reed Robinson.
  • Niagara made it 2-1 just minutes later when Stenlund fed Noah Delmas on the power play. Luke Edgerton also notched a secondary assist on the goal.
  • Mercyhurst regained the lead late in the first and went up by a pair early in the second, but Johnny Curran's answer five minutes later helped turn the tide back in favor of the Purple Eagles.
  • With 11:51 elapsed in the second period, Edgerton earned his second point of the evening by popping home a goal that both Curran and Delmas had a hand in.
  • On a busted play later in the same period, what appeared to be a turnover by Niagara turned out to be a gift. Robinson collected a puck from Stenlund but was hit and had the puck deflect off his stick and away. The puck caromed right to Justin Kendall, who didn't hesitate to let his shot go and found the back of the net to put Niagara up for good.
