Purple Eagles Battle To 1-1 Draw At Rider

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Niagara women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw in double overtime with the Rider Broncs on Saturday.

Game Recap
  • The first half of the game was a defensive battle between the Purple Eagles and the Broncs. While Niagara took early chances, the team was unable to connect with the goal in the first half.
  • In the second half, the Purple Eagles got on the board. In the 64th minute, Betts set up Araujo with a leading pass into the box to put NU up, 1-0.
  • The Broncs tied things up in the 86th minute with a shot from 25 yards out that connected with its target near the far post.
  • Niagara held the Broncs off for the remainder of regulation, forcing the game into overtime.
  • Staunch defense from both teams in two overtime periods led to a 1-1 draw and helped Niagara to a three-game unbeaten streak.

Coach's Corner
  • "I thought we did well to come on the road and steal a point at a very difficult venue," said head coach Peter Veltri. "If we can continue to win our home games and steal points on the road, we should be in a good position going into the MAAC tournament."

Inside the Numbers
  • Breanne Guevara led the Purple Eagles with three shots and two shots on goal. Araujo and Amelia Gulley were second in shots with two each.
  • The Broncs outshot the Purple Eagles, 18 to 10, but each team had four shots on goal.
  • Betts now leads the team in assists with three and Araujo is tied with Hailey Bicknell for second-most goals with three.

  • The Purple Eagles return home on Wednesday, Oct. 4 to host crosstown rival Canisius in the annual Battle of the Bridge meeting.
