KISSIMMEE, Fl. – To wrap up this week's seven-game road trip in Florida, the Purple Eagles softball team took on the Bucknell Bison in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 12. Bucknell narrowly defeated Niagara 2-1 in the first game of the afternoon despite a strong defensive effort. Despite being outhit 8-2 by the Bison in the opening game, Bucknell left 13 runners on base in the game, as five times Niagara got out of the inning with two or more Bison runners in the field.
The Purple Eagles closed the doubleheader with a 5-3 win, moving to 7-4 on the season. Niagara returns home with four wins in seven games in Florida, picking up single wins over South Dakota State and Bucknell in addition to a two-game sweep over St. Bonaventure.
Bucknell 2, Niagara 1
- After a scoreless first inning, Niagara kept Bucknell off the board despite the Bison loading the bases in the top of the second. The Purple Eagles picked up the first run of the game as Kendall Watkins scored Sarah March on an RBI single to make it 1-0 after two innings.
- Starting pitcher Jennifer Szilagyi held Bucknell scoreless on four hits through four innings of play, but the Bison tied the game at one in the top of the fifth on a single from Ryanne Rokos that drove in a runner from second base.
- With two outs in the top of the sixth, Bucknell was able to take a 2-1 lead on a single, a batter hit by a pitch, and a Niagara error. Szilagyi was replaced in the circle by Bridget Hogan who forced a pop-out by catcher Rachel Funk to end the inning down one run with the bases loaded.
- Chanelle Ward picked up a single in the bottom of the sixth, but three Niagara batters flied out to the Bucknell outfield, putting the Purple Eagles down 2-1 heading into the final inning.
- Both teams went three up, three down in the seventh as the Bison held off Niagara for the one-run win.
Niagara 5, Bucknell 2
- In a defensive battle, both teams were held scoreless through four innings, as Bucknell outhit Niagara 3-1.
- With two outs in the top of the fifth, Niagara was able to take a 2-0 lead. After Jennifer Timm and Taylor Moody walked, Chanelle Ward brought both runners home as she singled through the right side.
- The Bison came back and tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out, two-run single of their own.
- Niagara scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Jerri Ann Orfano, as Moody scored her second run of the game.
- Orfano would score later in the inning on a Bucknell throwing error, and Maria Gabriele capped the scoring with an RBI single.
- Pitcher Sierra Bertrand capped off the complete-game win allowing just one hit and no runs in the bottom of the seventh, giving Niagara the 5-2 win.

- Niagara heads to the Capital Invite in Washington, D.C. next weekend, hosted by George Washington University. The Purple Eagles will play three games against the host George Washington Colonials and two against the University at Albany Great Danes from Friday, March 17 to Sunday, March 19.
