Men's Soccer Faces Monmouth Wednesday In Season Finale

After a tough overtime loss for the Purple Eagles men's soccer team during its Senior Night at Niagara Field on Saturday, the team heads on the road to Monmouth for the season finale. The Purple Eagles and Hawks will kick off at 3 p.m. in what is the final game of the 2017 season for both teams. Wednesday's contest between Niagara and Monmouth can be viewed live through WatchESPN.
 
Purple Points
  • After a dramatic goal to tie the game late in regulation, Niagara was defeated 2-1 by the Fairfield Stags Saturday night on an overtime goal in the 96th minute.
  • Niagara trailed 1-0 but was able to tie the game in the 88th minute. Danilo Pekovic lined up a free kick from 25 yards out to the right of the box. Owen Carter got a head on the cross and flicked it over to Konrad Zydowicz, who put his shot far-post to equalize the swcore.
  • In the overtime period, Gerberich made one stop against Fairfield's Eirik Anderson but the next shot found the back of the net. In the 97th minute Matt McGlinchey wound up for Fairfield and sent a low shot for the far post. Gerberich got a hand on the shot, but could not keep it from crossing the goal line, sending Niagara to a 2-1 loss.
  • Zydowicz is the leading scorer for the Purple Eagles this season. The team captain and graduate back has six points on three goals.
  • Zulfikar Karimi and Bautista Pedezert are tied for second with five points on two goals and one assists each, while Luca Pacheco and Asante Carroll each have two goals.
  • Redshirt-junior Steve Casey is currently THIRD in the NCAA and leads the MAAC with 5.83 saves per game.

Monmouth Hawks (6-9-2, 3-5-1 MAAC)
 
  • Monmouth is 2-2-1 in its last five games as the Hawks enter their Senior Day game against Niagara on Wednesday.
  • The Hawks most recently picked up a 1-0 victory over Quinnipiac on Oct. 28, with Luke Bromley scoring the game-deciding tally in the 71st minute.
  • Monmouth holds a 5-0-1 edge in the all-time series with Niagara.
  • Jake Areman leads Monmouth in assists (four) and points (10), adding three goals. Colin Stripling has a Hawks-high four goals on the season.
  • Bobby Edwards leads Monmouth in goal with a 5-9-2 record, adding a 1.48 goals-against average and a .731 save percentage.
