Softball Drops Two At Rider

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Niagara Purple Eagles had their 10-game win streak against the Rider Broncs snapped in a doubleheader on Saturday. NU lost game one, 4-1, and game two 9-5.

Niagara 1, Rider 4

Rider pulled out game one in a low scoring affair. The Broncs scored two runs in the second inning on a Allysen Breeden RBI double and a RBI single by Amanda Irving. NU got out of the inning without suffering any more damage as the Broncs had the bases loaded.

One run in the fourth and fifth inning increased Rider's lead to 4-0. The Purple Eagles got on the scoreboard on a Chanelle Ward's sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Ally Gay.

Niagara 5, Rider 9

Niagara (4-38, 4-14 MAAC) recorded a season-high 12 hits in the game two defeat.  Brianna Clark led NU, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Katelyn Gruarin, Amanda Werth and Gay each had two hits.

The Purple Eagles scored two runs in the first inning with two outs. Ward singled up the middle to score Gruarin and Clark doubled to right centerfield scoring Ward, as NU led 2-0 after its half of the inning. The lead was short-lived as the Broncs scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning.

Rider added two runs in the second and one in the third to take a 7-2 lead after three innings. NU got one run back in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Werth grounded out to third, but scored Rebecca Saggiomo in the process.

The Broncs (12-33, 6-12 MAAC) answered in their half of the inning, scoring two runs to increase their lead to 9-3.

Niagara loaded the bases in the sixth inning with one out. Clark was walked, which scored Desarae Maldonado. Moody followed with a RBI on a fielder's choice to cut the lead to 9-5. NU left two runners on base in the seventh inning to end the game.

The Purple Eagles conclude the season against Monmouth on Sunday.
