BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Niagara women's basketball team fell to archrival Canisius, 65-59, on Tuesday night at the Koessler Athletic Center.
Senior guard
Meghan McGuinness knocked down two 3-pointers in the game to break the all-time three-point record at Niagara. McGuinness surpassed Kim Kuhn with 262 career three-points made.
A game that saw 11 ties and eight lead changes featured multiple players in double digits, led by
Victoria Rampado's game-high 20 points. McGuinness finished with 12 points on the night while
Taylor McKay added 10 points. Kelly Van Leewen dished out a team leading four assists, while Rampado finished with a team-high 11 rebounds to mark her third double-double of the season.
McGuinness hit her first three ball at the 13:05 mark to give the Purple Eagles (13-15, 9-10 MAAC) a 13-6 lead over the Golden Griffins (12-16, 9-9 MAAC). Canisius took a short one point lead with a little over five minutes left to play in the first half but
Victoria Rampado knocked down two free throws to reclaim a 22-21 lead.
Niagara's lead got cut to single-digits but it went into the break leading 27-26.
The two teams traded baskets early in the second half until another McGuinness three pointer put the Purple Eagles up 43-36 with 14:34 on the clock. The Griffs then went on a 7-0 run to tie the contest 43-43. Over the following nine minutes, both teams exchanged leads until the score was tied for the final time, 58-58, with 1:52 remaining in the game.
Canisius held a 60-59 lead with .26 seconds on the clock which forced the Purple Eagles to foul. The Griffs went 5-for-6 from the charity stripe in the final minute of play which led to the 65-59 decision.
"We shot the ball well but did a poor job taking care of the basketball," head coach
Kendra Faustin said. "I thought we also did a really good job rebounding, especially Victoria and Donisha who I think did a tremendous job on the boards."
Niagara shot 46.8 percent (22-for-47) from the field for the game while Canisius shot 44.4 percent after going 20-for-45 from the floor. The Golden Griffs made seven three-pointers on the game after shooting 70.0 percent (7-for-10) from beyond the arc.
NU had 14 assists for the game while claiming a 39-15 advantage on the boards. The Purple Eagles also had a 32-18 advantage in points in the paint.
Niagara is back on the court when it travels to New Rochelle to face the Iona Gaels in a 2 p.m. matchup.
