Stroemple, Lapszynski Lead Purple Eagles in Loss at Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Purple Eagles fell to conference opponent Monmouth, 83-60, on Sunday afternoon.

Kaylee Stroemple led the Purple Eagles in scoring with a career-high 20 points. She also added eight rebounds. Sam Lapszynski recorded the second double-double of her career with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Lapszynski also had a career-best five blocks.

"Sam and Kaylee are stepping up at a very high level right now," said head coach Jada Pierce. "Now, it's our job as a coaching staff to continue to develop our guard game."

In the first quarter, the Purple Eagles and the Hawks kept the score relatively close. With 4:35 left in the first quarter, Tiffany Corselli hit a 3-point shot, putting the score at 13-5, with Monmouth in the lead. A lay-up by Emily Granruth with 1:09 left in the first, followed by a lay-up by Stroemple with 48 seconds left put the Purple Eagles down by only 11 points, 22-11, going into the second quarter.

Stroemple opened scoring in the second quarter with a lay-up at the 9:08 mark. With 7:50 left, Stroemple struck again, hitting a 3-point shot, which was followed shortly by a Taylor McKay lay-up, which put the score at 25-19. A 3-pointer by Jamie Sherburne to end the first half put the score at 41-32, with the Hawks leading.

The Hawks began to pull away from the Purple Eagles (1-6) in the second half of the game. Though Niagara continued to be persistent on both offense and defense, the third quarter ended with Monmouth (2-4) up 64-44.

Jamie Sherburne opened scoring in the fourth quarter, making a lay-up and putting the Purple Eagles down by less than 20 points, 64-46. Granruth made two 3-pointers in less than a minute to close out the game; one with 1:11 left and the other with 35 seconds left.
