Men’s Soccer Battles Quinnipiac To Draw

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. –Alex Dimitriu's first half goal gave the Niagara Purple Eagles (1-8-2; 0-2-1) their first MAAC point of the season in a rain-soaked, 10-card, 1-1 draw versus the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Saturday.

Quinnipiac midfielder Max Rothenbucher opened the scoring with a stunning strike in the 14th minute. Rothenbucher was able to gain possession and tested his luck with a 30-yard rocket, which he buried in the upper right of the net.

In the 26th minute, Fabrizio Chiari's tight passing was rewarded when Dimitriu latched on to a penetrating pass into the box and buried the finish far post.

Dimitriu's goal proved to be the turning point of what unfolded as a card-filled first half. Between the 26th and 44th minutes, Quinnipiac's coach and three Purple Eagles were booked. The madness escalated in the 45th minute when a Chiari challenge led to a brief scuffle between players, though both teams were quick to prevent the situation from expanding. Chiari was booked for the initial challenge while Quinnipiac goal-scorer Rothenbucher was sent off with a straight red. To cap the chippy half, Quinnipiac's head coach was ejected in the intermission for dissent toward the referee.

The game's pace slowed tremendously with Niagara holding the man advantage, though Quinnipiac prevented them from scoring. Bautista Pedezert notched Niagara's only shot on target in the second half while goalkeeper Colin Hanley added one save in the frame. Quinnipiac added the game's 10th and final booking with an 80th minute yellow card.

An uneventful overtime saw Niagara dominate possession, but its only shot on goal was swallowed up by Henry. The tie provided NU with its first positive MAAC result of the season.

The Purple Eagles continue their 2015 campaign with a road showdown versus the ACC's Pittsburgh on Wednesday, Oct. 6.
