BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Niagara men's soccer team dropped its 2015 Battle of the Bridge matchup Wednesday night at Canisius College. Two goals from Canisius' Nicolo Baudo were the difference as the Golden Griffins sent Niagara to a 2-0 loss at the Demske Sports Complex.
Steve Pondeca led the Niagara attack with two of the team's three shots on goal, the third of which came from
Fabrizio Chiari.
Colin Hanley made two saves on four shots faced, as his record fell to 0-6-2 for the season.
Canisius opened the scoring in the 15
th minute, gaining the early momentum in the Battle of the Bridge matchup. Alex De Carolis sent a pass into the box for Nicolo Baudo, whose shot deflected off a defender and past Hanley.
Alex Dimitriu nearly tied the game in the 28
th minute with a blazing shot from the top of the box, but the rising shot found nothing but the crossbar.
Niagara came out firing on offense to start the second half, as
Brandon Galanti and
Steve Pondeca led the attack. Pondeca split the Canisius defense and got a shot on goal off a through ball from
Brennan Koslow, but he could not find the back of the net. In the 57
th minute, Baudo ripped home a shot for his second goal of the evening, doubling Canisius' lead in the game.
Following the men's loss and the women's soccer team's 1-0 overtime win Wednesday night, the Purple Eagles held on to their one-point edge in the Battle of the Bridge with the Golden Griffins, as Niagara now holds a 3-2 series lead. The Battle of the Bridge is an all-sports competition between cross-town rivals Niagara University and Canisius College with a system awarding points to the victors after every meeting. Points accumulate throughout the course of the season and a cross-town champion is crowned at the conclusion of the athletic calendar.
Niagara wraps up the week with their last road game of the season. The Purple Eagles head east to take on Monmouth Saturday evening for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
