Women’s Soccer Drops First Match of Season to Buffalo

Box Score

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 contest to the Buffalo Bulls in a non-conference home game on Sunday evening.

The Purple Eagles are now 2-1-1 while the Bulls, propelled by a goal from Jackie Hall and Celina Carrero each, remain unbeaten with a 4-0-1 record.

"It was a disappointing night overall.  We just didn't play how were capable of playing and we looked unsettled for long stretches of the game," head coach Peter Veltri said. "This group has a lot of character so I know we will bounce back with a great week of practice and be ready to play on Friday."

Niagara goalkeeper Claire Feiertag did not need to make a save in the first half and stopped two for the game, but was beaten by Hall in the 62nd minute via an assist from senior Sophie Therien.  Therien sailed a long cross from 25-yards out into the crowded box where Hall was able to tap it over Feiertag's head for her first of the season.  Buffalo doubled its lead in the 76th minute as senior Megan Glesen sent a long pass up the middle to the streaking Carrero who took a touch into the box and ripped a shot past the diving Feiertag.

Senior Maureen Papaconstantinou registered a team-high two looks on net, while fellow seniors Haillie Price and Chelsea Doughty each added a shot.

Buffalo held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks, and outshot the Purple Eagles, 10-4 on the game.

The Purple Eagles continue their four-game homestand with another non-conference tilt as they host Binghamton at Niagara Field on Friday, Sept. 12 at 4:00 p.m.
