Niagara and Duquesne Battle to Scoreless Stalemate

Box Score

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Junior goalkeeper Claire Feiertag helped the Niagara women's soccer team earn a 0-0 draw against Duquesne on Friday night at Rooney Field.

Feiertag has not allowed an opponent to find the back of the net since the 22nd minute of the season-opening contest at St. Bonaventure, a total of 288 minutes.  She made six saves this evening en route to her second shutout of the season, tying her career-high which was achieved during her rookie season.

The draw puts Niagara at 2-0-1 for the season, which stands as the longest unbeaten streak to begin a campaign since the 2010 squad went 2-0-1 in the first trio of games.  Duquesne now sits at 1-1-2.

"Defensively we played very well tonight," head coach Peter Veltri said.  "Our backs made it very difficult for Duquesne to create any good opportunities.  It was a good road test before conference play begins."

Both teams were playing in their second consecutive double overtime contest as neither Niagara nor Duquesne were able to get on the scoreboard in 90 minutes of play.  After a fairly even first half that saw the shot count stand at 5-4 in favor of Duquesne, the Dukes began to lay on the attack at the start of the second frame.  Feiertag remained strong in net for the Purple Eagles with four saves, while her counterpart, Devon Tabata, only needed to make one stop in the second 45 minutes to force overtime.

Momentum began to swing towards Niagara in the opening period of extra time, as the Purple and White grabbed the only shots on net courtesy of Amelia Gulley and Haillie Price.  Duquesne countered with a 2-1 shot advantage in the second OT with Niagara's look on net coming off the foot of Courtney Pierce.

The final shot count had Duquesne at 17 and Niagara at nine.

The back-to-back double overtime contests are the first since the 2005 season.  Niagara dropped a 3-2 double overtime battle to Western Carolina before playing Duquesne to a 3-3 stalemate the following game.

The Purple Eagles will put their three-game unbeaten streak to the test at Niagara Field against Buffalo on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 7:00 p.m.
