Purple Eagles Battle Duquesne, Buffalo in Non-Conference Action

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The non-conference schedule continues for the Niagara women's soccer program on Friday, Sept. 5 as the Purple Eagles travel to Duquesne. Niagara then begins a four-game homestand when it returns to Monteagle on Sunday, Sept. 7 to host Buffalo.  Both contests are scheduled for 7 p.m. starts.

Purple Eagles 101
  • The 2014 season began with a pair of victories for the Purple Eagles which included a 3-1 road triumph over St. Bonaventure, followed by a home-opening double-overtime win against Drexel.  
  • The Purple and White have five individuals with at least two points, including junior midfielder Hayley Besaw who leads the squad with three points all coming off assists.  Seniors Courtney Pierce, Catherine Meyer and Haillie Price, and freshman Eva Bachmann have scored a goal each.  
  • Goalkeeper Claire Feiertag backstopped the Purple Eagles to both victories lats week on nine saves in 108 minutes of play.  Feiertag stands at a 0.46 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage.
Quick Purple Facts
  • After dropping St. Bonaventure and Drexel last week, the 2014 Purple Eagles became the first team since the 2010 squad to kick-off a campaign with a pair of victories. 
  • Besaw tied her career-high of two points off two assists in the season-opening contest against St. Bonaventure. 
  • Feiertag pocketed shutout number one of the season in the 1-0 double overtime victory over Drexel.  The junior needs one more blank slate to tie her career-high which was achieved during her rookie season.
Taking a Look at Duquesne
  • The Dukes have suited up for three games thus far, holding a 1-1-1 mark.  Duquesne's first win of the young season came against Pittsburgh in double overtime with its most recent outing ending in a 3-2 loss to Robert Morris.
  • Forwards Amy Vinopal and Maggie Mayo have tallied the squad's only pair of goals, while freshman midfielder Linnea Faccenda and sophomore forwards Cydney Staton and Emma Coccia have contributed an assist each.
  • Goaltending duties will likely go to Devon Tabata who has started two of the three games.  The senior goalkeeper has a pair of shutouts to her name, not allowing a goal in 214 minutes of play, while making 10 saves.   
  • Duquesne holds a lean 5-3-1 advantage over Niagara in the all-time series.  The last time these two teams met was during the 2013 season at Monteagle Ridge where the Dukes came out with a 1-0 victory in extra time.
Scouting the Bulls
  • In four games this season the Bulls have compiled a 3-0-1 record with their most recent victory coming against Drexel in a 1-0 shutout. 
  • Buffalo has a pair of players tied for the team-lead in points, as senior Katie Roberts and sophomore Celina Carrero have each scored a goal and added a helper for three points.  Freshman Julia Benati and senior Megan Abman have also contributed to the score sheet with a goal each. 
  • Rookie goalkeeper Laura Dougall has started in all four games thus far, not allowing a single goal in 380 minutes of play with 19 saves.  
  • This will be the 17th time the two squads have faced each other, with Buffalo leading the series by a 20-11-1 record.  The Purple Eagles won the preview contest against the Bulls, coming out with a 2-1 victory on Buffalo's home turf.
On the Docket
  • After its bout with Buffalo, Niagara continues its four-game home stand against Binghamton on Friday, Sept. 12 at 4:00 p.m.  Cleveland State (Sept. 14) and Robert Morris (Sept. 18) round out the longest home stand of the season.
