The Purple Eagles open up MAAC play this weekend beginning Wednesday in Connecticut against the Quinnipiac Bobcats before coming home to face the Monmouth Hawks.

Setting The Scene
  • The Purple Eagles are 32-15-7 in the past five seasons against MAAC opponents. When participating in the MAAC Tournament, NU is 2-1-1 in the past five years.
  • Niagara is undefeated in its last five MAAC openers with a 4-0-1 record. The unbeaten streak was extended by last season's 2-2 draw against Saint Peter's. Callum Willmott opened the scoring in the 22nd minute and broke a 1-1 tie in the 40th. The Purple and White were less than nine minutes away from a victory when SPU scored in the 81st minute to force the draw.
  • Willmott and Andrew Ferguson are tied for the team lead in points this year with four apiece. Ferguson is also tied for the lead in shots on goal, with seven, with sophomore Nicholas Watson.
  • Joel Gerberich played in goal for the four games prior to last Saturday's match agaisnt West Virginia and posted a 2-1-1 record with a 0.71 GAA and 15 saves. Steve Casey went back in goal and turned in a strong showing agaisnt the Mountaineers having turned away 7-of-9 shots that were on target.

Taking A Look At The Opposition
  • The Purple Eagles hope to start the conference season off on the right foot and for their first-ever win against their newer conference opponent, the Quinnipiac Bobcats. They lost last season's meeting 1-0.
  • Tuesday's game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff.
  • The first match between Niagara and Quinnipiac took place on Sept. 2, 2000. The Bobcats won 2-1.
  • NU hosts the Monmouth Hawks at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday at Niagara Field.
  • The Purple Eagles are also looking to beat the Monmouth Hawks for the first time. The teams met three times since the innaugural match in 1996. The Hawks won the first MAAC action last season 2-0.
