Men's Soccer Pressures Throughout In 1-0 Loss

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles tallied five shots in the second half and controlled play throughout, but were unable to get on the board as they fell to the Detroit Titans 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Niagara Field.

The first half started out with the Purple Eagles (3-4-0) controlling play throughout much of the early going, but it was Detroit (3-3-1) that was able to crack the scoreless tie in the 10th minute to take a 1-0 lead. NU regained control again as time wound down in the half as Andrew Ferguson and Brennan Koslow forced the Titans keeper to make a pair of saves. Ferguson's chance came in the 31st minute while Koslow put a ball on target in the 41st.

"We shot ourselves in the foot early with a poor decision in the back to concede the goal," head coach Eric Barnes said. "The team did a great job making adjustments to deal with their unique defensive system and we completely dominated the second half."

Niagara continued to pour on the pressure as the second half began despite having to adjust to the entire team being man-marked by Detroit. Ferguson had another chance in the 45th minute before Callum Willmott put a shot on target later in the 56th minute. The Purple Eagles outshot the Titans 5-1 in the second half, but were unable to finish and the Titans held on for a 1-0 victory.

"We had the quality and a dominating amount of possession in the second half, but we were unable to find the goal," said Barnes. You have to credit to Detroit for finding a way to keep us off the score sheet."

Ferguson led the team with five total shots. Joel Gerberich got the start in net and took the loss after allowing the single goal.

The Purple Eagles close out non-conference play with a pair of games next week. They hit the pitch on Tuesday to take on the Pittsburgh Panthers at 6:00 p.m.
