NU Wraps Up Non-Conference Schedule Versus Mount St. Mary’s

The Niagara Purple Eagles will close out the year at home with its final non-conference contest of the season against Mount St. Mary's (Md.).

The Mount are 0-7 on road games so far this season and are coming off a two-game losing skid like NU. On the road, the Mountaineers are shooting 34.6 percent from the field and are being outrebounded by 12.7 boards per game.

Niagara (5-5), on the other hand, is 3-2 this season in the Gallagher Center.  The Purple Eagles won their first three home games, all of which saw the team shoot over 40.0 percent from the floor.  NU shot at a 50.9 percent clip against Detroit, a 49.2 percent success rate against Saint Peter's and 42.1 percent versus Manhattan.

At home the Purple Eagles are scoring 67.6 points per game, a 2.0 ppg improvement over its season average, and boast a +13.0 scoring margin. Meghan McGuinness is averaging 11.8 ppg over the first five games at the 'Taps' Gallagher Center while shooting 43.8 percent from the field (21-for-48) and 3-point mark (14-for-32).

On The Court
Mt. St. Mary's Moutaineers (2-8, 0-0 NEC)
  • Mount St. Mary's are led by Bryan Whitten who is in his 8th year as head coach at the Mount.
  • Senior guard Jacueline Brewer is the Mountaineers' top scorer, averaging 12.4 points, and pulls down 3.8 rebounds per game
  • Senior guard Jenn Carney also averages double-figures for the Mount. Carney scores 10.3 points per contest and averages 2.3 rebounds per game.
  • Junior center Sarafina Arthur-Williams leads the team with 5.1 rebounds per game while also contributing 6.1 points per outing.
 
Against the Mount (Mountaineers lead 1-0)
  • While the Purple Eagles have been a Division I program since the 1974-75 season, this will only be the second time these two teams will compete.
  • Niagara dropped the only meeting between the two schools on Nov. 25, 1989 by a final score of 79-73 at Knott Arena in Emmitsburg, Md.
 
Against the Northeast Conference
  • Niagara has only played eight of the 10 schools that make up the present-day Northeast Conference (NEC). The Purple Eagles are 11-11 versus NEC opponents Central Connecticut State, Fairleigh Dickinson, LIU Brooklyn, Mt. Saint Mary's, Robert Morris, St. Francis (N.Y.), St. Francis (Pa.), and Wagner.
 
Tipoff Tidbits
  • Niagara's offense is led by senior guard Meghan McGuinness, who averages 11.2 points per game.
  • McGuinness has scored at least 10 points in the last five games. It is the longest double-figures streak by a Purple Eagle this season.
  • Tuesday will mark the 11th game of the season for the Purple Eagles and their sixth contest at home.
  • NU has a 4.2 rebounding margin against its opponents which is good for second in the MAAC.
  • The Purple and White are coming off a 76-70 loss to Dartmouth on Dec. 28.
