Women's Basketball Takes On Binghamton Wednesday

Weathering The Storm
The Niagara Purple Eagles will try to snap a three-game losing streak when it faces the Binghamton University Bearcats at 2:00 p.m. at the Binghamton Events Center.

Niagara (0-3) heads into Wednesday looking to get their first win of the season. The Purple Eagles dropped their first three games this season falling to YSU, Pittsburgh and UB. NU shot at a 41.3 percent clip against Youngstown and a 41.2 percent success rate from beyond the arc against Pittsburgh. NU is coming off a 73-64 loss to Buffalo as Meghan McGuinness led the team with a season-high 22 points and six rebounds. 

Binghamton (1-2) opened the season with an 80-49 loss to the Akron Zips who is a member of the MAC. BU secured its first victory (90-84) this season against Delaware State on Saturday, Nov. 15. The Bearcats are coming off an 89-71 defeat by Xavier as senior forward Sherae Swinson finished with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Imani Watkins added 19 points and freshman point guard Jasmine Sina had 17 points.

Niagara leads 4-1 in the all-time series against Binghamton, having swept the past four meetings. Most recently, the Purple Eagles defeated the Bearcats 69-53 at the Gallagher Center on Nov. 23, 2013.

On The Court
Binghamton Bearcats (1-2, 0-0 AEC)
  • The Bearcats are led by Linda Cimino who is in her first year as head coach at BU.
  • Binghamton was picked to in the American East Conference.
  • BU is led by freshman guard Imani Watkins, who is averaging a team-high 19.7 points per game.
  • Watkins has reached double figures in scoring in all three games this season, including a career-high 21 points against Delaware State.
  • Sherae Swinson is BU's second leading scorer as she is averaging 17.5 points per game.
 
Against the Bearcats (Niagara leads 4-1)
  • This will be the fifth matchup between these two teams in the last six seasons.  Niagara won the last two meetings 69-53 and 63-57.
 
Against the America East Conference
  • Niagara has played five of the nine teams that make up the present day America East.  Coming into Wednesday's game with a 9-5 record against the conference, there is only one team Niagara has played that they have yet to beat (Albany).  They have at least one win against the other programs they've faced.
 
Staff Updates
  • Corinne Jones has recently been promoted to Associated Head for the Purple Eagles.
  • Former Niagara women's basketball player, Erika Harris joins the NU staff as an assistant coach.
  • Rene'e Polka begins her first season as the team's Director of Basketball operations and her fifth with the program overall. She spent three seasons as the team's manager before serving as the team's graduate assistant last season.
 
Believe NU
  • The last time NU started the season with three losses was the 2011-12 season.  They would go on to tie for 4th place in the MAAC and make a MAAC Tournament semifinal appearance.
 
Taking the Lead
  • The Purple Eagles have six seniors to lead the 2014-15 squad.
  • The rest of the team is made up of three juniors, three sophomores, and three freshmen.
  • This is the first time since the 2011-12 season the team has had more than one senior on the team.
