LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – In a physical game that saw a combined 31 fouls, the Siena Saints snuck out with a 1-0 victory over the Niagara men's soccer team on Wednesday afternoon at Siena Turf Field.
With the loss the Purple Eagles dropped to 2-7-1 on the season and 0-1-1 in MAAC play, while the Saints improved to 5-4-0 overall, and 1-0-0 in the conference.
"We had the better of the play all game, but we were unable to capitalize on it," head coach
Eric Barnes said. "We made one mistake defensively and were punished for it. Their goalkeeper came up big a few times to preserve the lead. We'll be ready to this Saturday."
The entire game was closely matched as Siena only held a thin 9-7 advantage in shots. It was Siena who broke through the scoreless draw one minute into the second half off the foot of Nathan Olukanmi. Sophomore Tom Allen made a run down the left side, sending a cross into the box that connected with Olukanmi for his second goal of the season. It was the only tally the Saints needed to pocket their first win in MAAC play.
Brenden Ottman wrapped up the afternoon with three saves.
After Saturday's game against Quinnipiac Niagara will continue its three-game homestand with a bout against Fairfield Stags on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. and wrapping up against the Rider Broncs on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 2 p.m.
