Men’s Soccer Battles Saint Peter's to a 2-2 Tie

Box Score

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Junior forward Callum Willmott's two-goal game propelled the Niagara men's soccer team to a 2-2 tie against Saint Peter's in the team's first MAAC contest of the year on Saturday afternoon at Niagara Field.

Willmott figured in a pair of first half goals to give the Purps a 2-1 lead heading into halftime, but the Peacocks rallied with an 81st minute goal to send the contest into overtime.
Saint Peter's had the better of the chances in the first period of extra time, outshooting the Purps 3-0.  The tides turned in the second overtime however, as Niagara amped up the pressure with five attempts on net including four of which came in the final four minutes.

With the draw, the Purple Eagles improve to 2-6-1 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play, while the Peacocks drop to 2-4-3 on the year and 0-0-1 in the MAAC.

Willmott got the scoring started in the 22nd minute, capitalizing on a poorly taken punt by Suarez.  The junior picked up the ball 25 yards out, and lobbed a long ball over the outstretched hands of the Saint Peter's goalkeeper for his second of the year.

The Peacocks responded a little over a minute later as Marcel Maddee released a top, left corner shot just outside the 18-yard box that evened the game, 1-1.

With under four minutes remaining in the opening half Niagara pulled ahead 2-1 off Willmott's second goal of the game.  Julian Ekeze began the play with a run down the left side, finding Willmott at the top of the box.  Willmott ripped a high shot right under the crossbar to give the Purps the lead heading into half.

The second half was equally matched as both teams saw quality looks on net.  It was SPU that capitalized on its chances, tallying the equalizer in the 81st minute to send the game into extra time.  Maddee scored his second of the contest off a low, left corner shot from 15-yards out.

Niagara finished the game with 20 shots compared to 17 Saint Peters shots.

The Purple Eagles hit the road for a conference battle against the Siena Saints on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at the Siena Turf Field.  Kickoff is schedule for 3 p.m.
