Men’s Soccer Opens MAAC Play Against Saint Peter’s on Saturday

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara men's soccer team begins Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play when it hosts MAAC opponent Saint Peter's on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m.

Purple Eagles 101
Niagara is coming off its second victory of the season when the Purps shutout Cornell, 1-0, on Sunday, Sept. 29.  Senior Ken Cooper netted the game-winning goal in the 47th minute of play, helping to end the Purple Eagles' four-game losing streak.  Freshman goalkeeper Brenden Ottman made three saves in net for NU on the afternoon. 

Overall, the Purple Eagles are led by rookie Nicholas Watson who has two goals and three assists on the season.  Julian Ekeze and Callum Willmott have each scored on goal and pocketed a helper for three points. 

Ottman earned MAAC Goalkeeper of the Week accolades after shutting out the Big Red on Sunday for the sophomore's first blank slate as a Purp.  The freshman has made 13 saves in 270 minutes of play for a .812 save percentage and a 1.00 goals-against average.

Scouting The Peacocks
The Peacocks come to Monteagle Ridge with a 2-4-2 record, and their first conference coming on Saturday.  The team is currently sporting a two-game unbeaten streak after drawing with  Binghamton and coming out with a 1-0 win against  Bryant.

The Saint Peter's offense is led by Marcel Maddee (2-4-8), while Louis Mobb, last week's MAAC Rookie of the Week, is second on the team with four points off a pair of goals.  Five more Peacock's have secured points this season. 

Carlos Suarez has played the majority of minutes between the posts.  In 490 minutes of play he has made 34 saves and only allowed six goals for a .850 save percentage.

All-Time vs. Saint Peter's
The all-time series dates back to 1990 with the Peacocks holds a slim 10-9-4 advantage over the Purps.  Before last season's game was cancelled, the teams met on Oct. 14, 2011.  Niagara came out with a 1-0 victory.

Up Next for Niagara
Niagara will hit the road on Wednesday, Oct. 9 to take on the Siena Saints for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
