LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Niagara women's soccer team battled MAAC opponent the Rider Broncs into double-overtime, but had to settle for a 1-1 draw Wednesday afternoon at Ben Cohen Field.
The result gives Niagara a 4-11-2 record on the season, and a 3-4-2 MAAC record, while Rider is deadlocked at 7-7-1 overall, and 4-4-1 in the league.
"We played well enough to win tonight. We had two unbelievable chances to win the game late, but we failed to convert," head coach
Peter Veltri said. "Defensively we played well, and held them to only a few opportunities."
The team's went into the half knotted at zero as neither could get behind the solid goaltending of Niagara's
Claire Feiertag and Rider's Vanessa Perdomo. Feiertag made four saves in the half compared to her counterpart's one stop.
Catherine Meyer was one to break the scoreless tie as the junior scored the game's first goal in the 76th minute. Freshman
Shawnique Samuels recorded her first assist in the Purple and White after directing a cross into the box that connected with Meyer from close range for her second goal of the season.
Rider caught Niagara on its heels right after the Purps gained the lead, netting the game-tying goal 36 seconds later off the foot of Priscilla Santos. A Niagara foul gave the Broncs possession, and Victoria Maley found Priscilla for a header that would eventually send the contest into overtime.
Heading into added time, the Broncs held a 16-5 advantage in shots, and continued to press in overtime with five shots, three of which Feiertag had to stop to preserve the point for NU. Rider goalkeeper Bethany-May Howard, who replaced Perdoma at the start of the second half, saw three Niagara shots sail wide during overtime.
Meyer led the team with two shots on goal, with
Breanna Catipovic, Shawnique Samuels and
Sonia O'Neill also contributing to the Purple Eagle offensive opportunities. Feiertag wrapped up the afternoon with eight saves, one shy of her career-high she achieved this season against Quinnipiac.
Niagara returns home on Saturday, Oct. 26 for its final contest of the regular season. The Purple Eagles will take to the field against the Iona Gaels at 2 p.m. for Senior Day.
