Purple Eagles Host Rider on Wednesday, Visit Iona on Saturday

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara men's soccer team will welcome the Rider Broncs to Niagara Field on Wednesday, Oct. 23 before traveling to New Rochelle, N.Y. to face the Iona Gaels.  Wednesday's game will be a 2 p.m. kickoff and Saturday's game will begin at noon.

Purple Eagles 101
The Purple Eagles are coming off a 1-0 overtime loss to Fairfield on Saturday, Oct. 19.  Niagara's Jack Welsh netted the team's only goal of the game, while Brenden Ottman made four saves. 

On the year overall, the Purple Eagles are led by Callum Willmott's and Nicholas Watson's seven points.  Willmott has three goals and an assist on the season, while Watson has two goals and three helpers.  Julian Ekeze follows that up with four points (goal; two assists).

Ottman has accumulated a .743 save percentage to along with a 1.24 goals against average.  He also has one shutout on the season.

Scouting the Broncs
The Broncs saw their three-game winless streak halted last Saturday when the team pulled out a 1-0 victory over Manhattan.  Rider owns a 7-5-1 overall record, and a 2-2-1 MAAC mark which places them in a four-way tie for fourth place with Manhattan, Fairfield and Iona.

Overall, freshman Christian Flath leads the squad with 17 points (five goals, seven assists), followed by sophomore Sonimi Halliday (four goals) and freshman Warren Holmes' (two goals; two assists) six points. 

In net, rookie goalkeeper David Pastuna has accumulated a .909 save percentage to go along with his 0.72 goals against average.

All-Time vs. Rider
Wednesday's contest will be the 17th time the two sides face each other, with Rider holding a slim 7-6-3 advantage in the all-time series.  In their last meeting on Oct. 7, 2012 the teams battled to a scoreless draw. 

Taking a Look at Iona
The Gaels are coming off a 2-0 loss to Siena on Saturday, pushing their record to 5-6-2 on the season, and 2-2-1 in MAAC play.  Iona is holding the fourth spot with Manhattan, Rider and Fairfield in the league standings with seven points.

On the season, senior Franklin Castellanos leads the squad with 16 points (four goals; eight assists), followed by junior Ignacio Maganto's 15 points (six goals; three assists) and senior Samuel Adjei's seven points (three goals; one assist).

Redshirted freshman goaltender Julian Petrello has accumulated a .776 save percentage to go along with his 1.12 goals against average on the year.

The Purple Eagles vs. the Gaels
Saturday's contest will be the 25th time the two sides face each other, with NU leading the all-time series, 13-10-1.  In their last meeting on Oct. 28, 2013 Niagara came away with a 1-0 victory over the Gaels.

Following this week's games, the Purple Eagles will travel to Buffalo, N.Y. to face Canisius on Wednesday, Oct. 30, before taking to the field against Monmouth on Saturday, Nov. 2 at West Long Branch, N.J.
