LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Niagara women's soccer team dropped a close 3-2 decision to the Rider Broncs Sunday evening at Ben Cohen Field.
After
Catherine Meyer tallied the equalizer a minute into the second 45 minutes of play, Jennifer Meier slipped in a left-footed shot past NU keeper
Claire Feiertag with five minutes remaining in the contest to lead to Broncs (9-3-3; 3-2-1 MAAC) to the conference victory.
"I'm not happy with our performance today," head coach
Peter Veltri said. "When you consider the importance of today's game, we didn't play the way we are capable. We are going to need to play much better next weekend if we are going to win."
Jody Sokol scored in the opening minute play to give the Broncs an early one-goal lead. The Purple Eagles (8-9; 3-4 MAAC) found the back of the net 15 minutes later as
Hayley Besaw netted a 15-yard shot for her third goal of the season to bring the game back even.
The teams went into intermission with Rider up by a tally though, after Abi Cottam fired a low shot past Feiertag into the bottom corner for the 2-1 lead. The Broncs also held a nine to two advantage in shots.
Following the break, Niagara found the back of net early as Meyer saw her high shot slip through the fingers of goalkeeper Jenn Nichols for the sophomore's fourth goal of the season. The play was assisted by
Kayla Picanco.
Rider would continue pressuring the Niagara defense though, outshooting the Purple Eagles 10-1 and eventually netting the game-winning tally late in the stanza.
Feiertag stopped eight Rider shots to tie her season-high.
Niagara wraps up the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 27 against crosstown rival Canisius at 7 p.m.
