Women's Hoops Opens Gallagher for 2012

After playing five games over four weeks on the road, the Purple Eagles finally return home for a game in the Gallagher Center.  Niagara will look to continue it’s strong play in-conference and build on its 1-1 MAAC record when it faces the Iona Gaels. 
 
Iona has enjoyed some recent success but Niagara will look to take advantage of historical streaks to get back into the win column against the Gaels.

Last Time Out...
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Niagara women’s basketball team wrapped up its five-game road trip with a hard-fought loss to the Rider Broncs 60-53 on Wednesday.
   
Niagara (4-10, 1-1 MAAC) came out of the break down two but scored the first five points of the half but Rider (9-4, 1-1 MAAC) kept it close and eventually took a two-point lead.
   
Late in the game the Purple Eagles found themselves in foul trouble and Rider pulled away of late and won the game 60-53.
 
On The CourtIona Gaels (5-8, 1-1 MAAC)  
Iona’s 87-71 win over Siena on Jan. 4 broke a six-game losing streak but began the season winning four of its first six games.  So far this season the Gaels are 1-6 on the road.

The Gaels are led by senior Kristina Ford and freshman Damika Martinez.  Ford has a team-high 17.6 points per gameand Martinez is only a little behind with 13.4 points per game. 
 
Against the Gaels (Niagara leads 25-21)
The Purple Eagles enjoyed some success against Iona, winning 12 of 14 games until 2006 when the Gaels have won the last 13 contests.
 
Opening up Gally
Since joining the MAAC in 1989-90 season, NU has opened up the January home scheudule against a MAAC opponent 16 times in the last 22 years.
 
If You Remember...
The last time Niagara returned home after a five-game road-trip was Jan. 16, 1995 in a game against Iona.  The Purple Eagles topped the Gaels 95-76.
 
Save The Date
Since a loss to DePaul on Jan. 7, 1989 the Purple Eagles have gon undefeated in MAAC play in games played on Jan. 7, including a 2-0 home record and going 6-0 overall.
