Last Time Out...
BALTIMORE – The Niagara women’s basketball team snapped a few skids with a 57-54 victory over the Loyola Greyhounds on Monday at the Reitz Arena for its first win at Loyola in 20 years.
The Purple Eagles (4-9, 1-0 MAAC) swarming defense forced 24 turnovers and kept Loyola (4-8, 0-1 MAAC) out of sync all game en route to their first win against a conference opponent since beating Manhattan in the 2010 MAAC Tournament Quarterfinals.
On The Court: Rider Broncs (8-4, 0-1 MAAC)
Rider’s loss to Manhattan on Jan. 2 ended the team’s five-game winning streak that spanned almost a month. Overall the Broncs have won six of their last 10 games.
They are led by sophomore MyNeshia McKenzie, whose 10.1 rebounds per game have her ranked 21st in the nation, and senior Ali Heller who’s second on the team in points per game, ranks 19th nationally in three-point field-goal percentage and 65th in three-point field-goals per game.
Wednesday Games
The Purple Eagles are 1-1 in their last two games played on a Wednesday. Niagara defeated rival Canisius 52-49 on Feb. 3, 2010 and dropped a contest to St. Bonaventure, 68-47, on Nov. 24, 2010
Opening MAAC Play The Right Way
With its 57-54 win over Loyola on Jan. 2, Niagara opened up conference play with a win for the first time since the 2004-05 season. That season Niagara won its first MAAC game over the Rider Broncs on Dec. 4, 2004.
The 04-05 team’s 11-7 conference record led the way to a 17-12 overall record.
Déjà vu All Over Again
Like they did for the 2007-08 season the Purple Eagles begin conference play with games on the road against the Loyola Greyhounds and Rider Broncs. In the 07-08 season Niagara defeated Rider by the slimmest of margins, winning the game 58-57.
