Last Time Out...
The Niagara women’s basketball team erased a nine-point halftime deficit but eventually fell to the Siena Saints, 62-49, on Friday.
Niagara (6-11, 2-3 MAAC) trailed Siena (4-10, 2-3 MAAC) 32-23 to open the second half but began its rally four minutes into the half.
Lauren Gatto got things going with a layup at 16:29 and four minutes later, a three-pointer by Johnson capped an 11-1 run to give the Purple Eagles their first lead of the game at 36-35 lead with 12 minutes remaining.
The Saints took a small lead but Niagara continued to battle and did not let Siena’s lead increase to more than five points until late in the game when it was forced to foul. The Saints were able to pull away at the free-throw line with a 62-49 win.
On The Court
Marist Red Foxes (10-6, 5-0 MAAC)
The Red Foxes dropped four of five games before conference play, losing to Boston University, St. Bonaventure, Hofstra and Kansas State, with their only win of the stretch coming against Auburn. Since then, Marist has won five straight against conference rivals St. Peter’s, Canisius, Rider, Manhattan, and Fairfield. The team’s 75.5 free-throw percentage has them ranked 24th in the nation.
Marist is led by senior guard Corielle Yarde who is averaging 15.6 points per game. Yarde also ranks 67th in the nation in assists per game with 4.5.
Against the Red Foxes (Marist leads 18-13)
The Purple Eagles have won one of the last four regular season meetings against the Red Foxes. Between Jan. 31, 1999 and Jan. 21, 2001, Niagara was able to win six straight against its conference foe
We’ve Done This Before...
The last time Niagara faced Marist following games against Saint Peter’s and Siena was in the 2001-02 season. The Purple Eagles came out on top with a 22-point victory, defeating the Red Foxes 83-61.
A Relative Unknown
After games against Siena and Saint Peter’s, who rank second and third respectively on Niagara’s games played against MAAC opponents list, the Purple Eagles will play the team they have played the fewest times in the MAAC. Niagara has played the Saints 31 times, two games behind Rider for eighth place.
For The First Time
Johnson led the Purple Eagles in scoring for the first time this season, scoring 11 points against the Siena Saints on Jan. 13. The sophomore led Niagara once in her freshman campaign when she scored 10 points against Iona on Feb. 14, 2011.
