Women's Hoops Drops Rivalry Contest At Canisius

Chanel Johnson

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Niagara women's basketball team fell to archrival Canisius on its senior day, 55-27, on Thursday night at the Koessler Athletic Center.

Niagara (1-27, 0-17 MAAC) was held to its lowest points total in program history, including 10 second half points,  en route to dropping its 22nd straight game of the season. NU went 9-for-46 (19.6%) from the field and 0-for-9 from 3-pointers in the game. Canisius (10-18, 6-11 MAAC), which only shot  37.7 percent from the field, was 9-for-20 from behind the arc which was the difference in the game.

"We had a rough night offensively," head coach Kendra Faustin said. "We missed some layups in the first half and Liz (Flooks) and (Jessica) Flamm had off nights."

Freshman Chanel Johnson led Niagara in scoring with 12 points and was perfect (6-for-6) from the 3-point line. Johnson made a pair of free throws to cut the score to 13-12 with 9:56 left in the first half as Canisius was in the middle of a seven-minute scoring drought. Niagara, however, couldn't manage to take the lead and would trail 23-17 at the half.

Canisius found its shooting touch in the second half. The Golden Griffins scored the first 11 points of the half to go on a 29-4 run. The shorthanded Purple Eagles, who were playing with seven players, were unable to keep up.

"We can't weather runs because we don't have enough bodies to put into the game," Faustin said. We had seven people dressed and cant' get up and down the floor."

Niagara concludes its regular season with a MAAC TV game at Rider on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
