LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. –
Carl Haworth scored his ninth and tenth goals of the season as the Purple Eagles men’s soccer team soared past the Rider Broncs 3-0.
“Rider, to their credit, came out strong and really took it to us in the first half,” head coach
Chase Brooks said, “but with a team effort we weathered the storm and really capitalized on in the 2
nd half on our opportunities.
Niagara (8-4-3, 3-2-2 MAAC) scored its first goal on a Haworth penalty kick in the 56
th minute. A minute later, freshman
Callum Willmott scored his fourth of the year off of a cross from
Gino Corasaniti to bring Niagara’s lead up to 2-0. The Broncs (3-10-1, 2-4-0) would outshoot Niagara for the next nine minutes (as well as the game by a margin of 14-9) but Haworth would score his second of the night with 24 minutes left in regulation to cement the victory.
“It was a good team win, guys did what we needed to do,” said Brooks. “We talked about getting back to basics and giving a good team effort and the guys worked hard and executed tonight.
Senior
Brett Petricek would make two more saves down the stretch, bringing his total to four, to preserve his sixth shutout of the season.
“I’m proud of the guys and how hard they worked, now its time to re-focus and get ready for the next one,” Brooks said.
The Purple Eagles are back in action on Sunday when they travel to Baltimore to play the Loyola Greyhounds.
