Women's Soccer Wins OT Thiller

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - A Chelsea Mandrino goal with 90 seconds remaining in double overtime sealed a come from behind 2-1 victory for the Niagara women's soccer team (4-7-0; 2-0-0 MAAC) over the host Manhattan Jaspers (2-7-1; 0-2-0 MAAC) on Sunday morning.

Niagara took all the shots in the overtime periods, by an 11-0 margin. The Purple Eagles came extremely close in the 102nd minute, when Breanna Catipovic ripped a shot off the crossbar. Mandrino scored the game-winning goal with 90 seconds remaining, when she turned around and booted the ball from 20 yards out, past Jaspers goalkeeper Kara Davis.

"When I saw that I had an open shot on net, I just put my head down and took it," Mandrino said. "I am really proud of all of my teammates and their effort today. It was a great way to end the weekend."

Head coach Peter Veltri was proud of his team for sticking with it, in order to get the victory.

"It was a great game, without a doubt it was the best game we played this year," Veltri said.  "We earned that win on the road. To outshoot them 42-13 is outstanding and an example of how hard we played."

Manhattan took a 1-0 lead early in the game, when Martine Diamond took the ball, drew Niagara goalkeeper Gabrielle Wilson out of position and put it past her. The Purple Eagles outshot the Jaspers 18-8 in the opening 45 minutes, but were unable to dent the scoreboard.

The game would be tied up in the 69th minute, when Courtney Pierce passed the ball to Michaela DiFazio, which she would boot into the right corner of the net. The Purple Eagles continued to push the tempo, outshooting the Jaspers 13-5 in the second half, but the game was destined for overtime.

Wilson made seven saves for Niagara in the overtime victory.

"I'm very pleased with the way our juniors and seniors stepped up today and took charge of the game," Veltri said. "It was great to see Michaela tie the game and Chelsea win it for us."

The Purple Eagles are back in action on Friday, Oct. 7th, when they host Rider at 7 p.m.
