NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Niagara women's basketball team could not slow down the five-time defending MAAC champion Marist Red Foxes as it fell 95-48 on Sunday at the Gallagher Center.
"They certainly are a very talented team and we had a tough time protecting the inside because of their size," head coach Kendra Faustin said. "If we take away one thing, they will make a layup and if we take that away they would hit a 3-pointer.”
A couple of streaks were extended on Sunday. Niagara (1-16, 0-6 MAAC) dropped its 11th straight while Marist (15-2, 6-0 MAAC) won its 11th in a row. The short-handed Purple Eagles quickly fell into a 13-0 hole to the conference leading Red Foxes en route to trailing 47-23 at halftime.
The Purple Eagles did shot 42.1 percent (8-for-19) from the field, but could not keep up with the top-ranked offensive team in the conference. Marist shot over 50 percent from the field and the 3-point line and was 8-for-9 at the free-throw line in the half.
Niagara matched the Red Foxes shot-for-shot to start the second half until Marist sprinted away with help from the six 3-pointers to finish the game with 11 3-pointers.
Senior Liz Flooks was the team leading scorer with 13 points. Flooks had three 3-pointers in the game and is five short of tying Chantelle Wilson (’06) and Eva Cunningham (’05) for fifth all-time. Katie Gattuso and Jessica Flamm had nine and eight points, respectively, while Meghan Waterman led the team with four assists.
"They were possessions where we really moved the ball well and when we took care of the ball I thought we did a nice job,” Faustin said.
Niagara is back on the road next weekend beginning on Friday, Jan. 21 at Saint Peter’s for a 6 p.m. tip.
