NEWARK, N.J. – The Niagara men’s soccer team was edged in double overtime by the Saint Peter’s Peacocks, 1-0, on Friday afternoon.
The meetings between Niagara (3-8-1, 1-2-0 MAAC) and Saint Peter’s (6-4-1, 2-0-1 MAAC) have been close in recent years and this game was no different. Tonight’s match was the seventh overtime meeting between the programs since 2003.
“I thought this was a pretty even game and a tie would have been a fair result, but unfortunately that’s not the way the game works,” head coach Dermot McGrane said. “We now have to regroup , move on and get ready to play Manhattan on Sunday.”
Junior forward Carl Haworth the led the match with seven shots, forcing five saves, in a wide open game; both teams combined for 30 shots. After 104 minutes of scoreless soccer, the break came for the Peacocks in the 105th minute when they scored the game winner. Junior goalkeeper Michael Moran tied a career-high with 10 saves.
Niagara will next face the Manhattan Jaspers on Sunday at 10 a.m
