PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Niagara played in its second consecutive overtime game to the start season and was able to hang on to 2-2 result against the La Salle Explorers on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Carl Haworth (Barrie, Ont.) and senior Stephen Kauble (Canal Winchester, Ohio) were on the scoresheet to open their accounts for the season.
“We played pretty well as a team,” head coach Dermot McGrane said. “We created some good chances to score, but the wood (goal post) was not to kind to us.”
Niagara (0-1-1) controlled the earlier stages of the first half and the pressure eventually led to a goal. In the 36th minute, Haworth buried a cross from Levi Tesch (Wolcott, N.Y.) to put Niagara up 1-0.
La Salle (0-1-1) would equalize five minutes after halftime from a penalty kick. The Explorers then took the lead in the 69th minute against the run of play. Four minutes later, Kauble smashed a shot into the upper left corner to tie the game at 2-2.
Tesch, who had a shot smacked off of the post in the first half, hit a 25-yard laser off of the crossbar two minutes from time. In overtime, Niagara had the better of play but neither team could break the 2-2 deadlock. John Fiutowski (Ottawa, Ont.) made a career-high 14 saves
Niagara next match is on Friday, Sept. 11 when it plays Old Dominion as part of the Old Dominion Tournament. The scheduled kickoff is at 7 p.m.
