MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Two second-half goals doomed the Niagara women's soccer team (1-1-0), as the Purple Eagles dropped a 2-1 decision to the host Robert Morris Colonials (1-2-0) on Friday afternoon. The setback marks the fifth consecutive season that Niagara has started 1-1-0.
For the second consecutive game, the Purple Eagles took a 1-0 lead into halftime, thanks to freshman Jamie Raepple (Grand Island, N.Y.). The rookie notched her second goal in as many games, when she broke loose and slipped the ball past Colonial goalkeeper Jessica Olin early in the first half.
Robert Morris would turn the tide just 11 minutes into the second half, notching the equalizer when Daneen Stevenato headed the ball past Niagara goalkeeper Ashleigh Bowers (Liverpool, N.Y.). After two great scoring opportunities by senior Michelle Emery (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and junior Courtney Davies (Las Vegas, Nev.), the Colonials took their first lead of the contest in the 78th minute, when a Katie Castner shot beat Bowers to the far corner.
"The way the game unfolded was very disappointing," head coach Peter Veltri said. "The one thing we can't do is dwell on this game, it's over and we are now moving on to preparing for Sunday."
The Purple Eagles are back in action on Sunday at 3 p.m., hosting Cornell in their home-opening game.
