VESTAL, N.Y. - The Niagara men's soccer team suffered a 4-0 setback against local rival the Binghamton Bearcats on Sunday afternoon. The Purple Eagles were done in by clinical finishing by the Bearcats.
Niagara (2-4-1) faced a ferocious Binghamton (5-3-0) attack all afternoon, but started the game the better of the two sides. Forward Carl Haworth (Barrie, Ont.) had his shot saved in the ninth minute, but it led to a quick counter attack by the Bearcats and Binghamton took full advantage by scoring the first goal of the match.
The Bearcats seized momentum for the rest of the game and were able to add another goal with 49 seconds remaining in the half to take a 2-0 halftime lead. Five minutes into the second half, Binghamton scored its third goal of the game from a direct free kick. The Bearcats made it 4-0 in the 59th minute.
The Purple Eagles' next match will be a road contest against Big 4 rival the University of Buffalo on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m.
