Men's Soccer Nipped By Cleveland State, 2-1

Jordan DeRoy

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Niagara men's soccer team was edged by the Cleveland State Vikings, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Niagara Field.

Freshman striker Bryan DaCruz (Barrie, Ont.) scored his second goal of the weekend with a 28th minute tap-in that cancelled out Cleveland State's Stephen Byer opener. Niagara (2-3-1) and CSU (2-3-1) each maintained possession well in the first half with both teams creating scoring chances, however, it was Cleveland State that made the most of its chances.

The Vikings scored the game-winning goal five minutes from the halftime whistle on a goal scored by Josh Williams from a corner kick.

Niagara was forced to chase the game in the second half and had two shots cleared off of the line. In the 70th minute, Jordan DeRoy (Barrie, Ont.) rose above two defenders in the box, but his header was denied by a great save by Brad Stuver. The scenario repeated itself in the 84th minute when Desmond Betteto's (Sarnia, Ont.) header was saved by a diving Stuver.

The Niagara-Cleveland State series is now tied at 2-2-2 since 2004.

Niagara travels to play the Binghamton Bears on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 3 p.m.
