CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Niagara women's soccer team (3-3-1) extended its shutout streak in a 2-0 victory over the Cleveland State Vikings (1-5-0) on Wednesday night. With the shutout victory, the Purple Eagles haven't allowed a goal in 234:15 of playing time.
Much of Niagara's recent defensive success can be attributed to junior goalkeeper Ashleigh Bowers (Liverpool, N.Y.), who made six saves in the victory. The education major now has two shutouts on the season, one short of her career-high set in 2008.
The Purple Eagles drew first blood when they scored within the first 15 minutes of the game for the third time this season. Junior Courtney Davies (Las Vegas, Nev.) scored off of a corner kick, when she launched a shot that found the high corner of the net. The Purple Eagles enjoyed a 1-0 halftime lead, while getting outshot 3-2.
Niagara would stretch its lead to 2-0 in the 78th minute, when sophomore Adrianna Gallo (Niagara Falls, Ont.) scored her first collegiate goal, capitalizing on a mistake by Viking goalkeeper Kelly Zinkiewich.
"We struggled to find our touch tonight, but we did enough on both sides of the ball to be successful," head coach Peter Veltri said. "It was good to see us score a couple of real nice goals, including Courtney's rocket of a shot to give us an early lead."
The Purple Eagles are back in action on Friday afternoon, when they travel to take on Albany at 4 p.m.
