NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Niagara women's soccer team (2-3-0) were outdueled by the Binghamton Bearcats (1-3-1) by a 2-0 margin in front of 210 fans at Niagara Field on Friday night.
Both teams had their chances in the first half, including senior Brittany Benthin (Medina, N.Y.) ripping one off of the post with 22 minutes left in the half. Twelve minutes later, Binghamton's Amanda Casares scored from just outside the box, putting the shot over the head of diving Niagara goalkeeper Ashleigh Bowers (Liverpool, N.Y.). Despite outshooting Binghamton 9-3, Niagara was down at the half by the slimmest of margins.
Binghamton would add an insurance marker 10 minutes into the second half, when an errant pass took a Bearcat bounce, giving Jamie Holliday a partial breakaway against Bowers. Niagara upped the offensive pressure down 2-0, but were unable to score.
"I'm disappointed with how we played tonight," head coach Peter Veltri said. "I thought we were better prepared for this game and we didn't execute our game plan tonight. We will need to take a few steps back to better prepare ourselves for Sunday and Syracuse."
The Purple Eagles are back on the pitch this Sunday, taking on Syracuse at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast via tape-delay by Lockport Community Television at 7 p.m.
