CELEBRATION, Fla. - The Niagara golf team fell to eighth place during the second day of the 2009 MAAC Golf Championship, just one stroke behind cross-town rival Canisius. Eleven strokes separate Niagara from fourth place, currently held by Fairfield.
Junior co-captain Jason Polka (Lewiston, N.Y.) shot a 75 on Saturday, making his two-day total of 151 good enough for sixth place overall. Polka is nine strokes behind Michael Mulieri of Loyola for the overall lead. Freshman Trevor Kenney (Burlington, Vt.) is currently tied for 16th place with a two-day total of 155.
Sophomore Jeremy Christie (St. Catherines, Ont.) shot an 80 (81-80-161), while junior Joe Tonnos (St. Catherines, Ont.) shot an 82 (82-82-164) and senior Chris Singleton (Niagara Falls, Ont.) shot a 90 (83-90-173).
Loyola (603) enjoys a slim two-stroke lead over Siena (605) heading into the final day of play. Iona is in third by a stroke, with Fairfield (620), Rider (623), Manhattan (626) and Canisius (630) all ahead of Niagara. The Purple Eagles are ahead of Saint Peter's (649) by 18 strokes.
The 2009 MAAC Championships conclude tomorrow, leaving the Purple Eagles limited time to climb the standings.
