NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - Senior Stephen Kauble’s (Canal Winchester, Ohio) first half double put Niagara on its way to a comfortable 4-0 win over the Manhattan Jaspers in wet conditions in its MAAC opener on Friday night.
“It was nice to see us hit the back of the net in the match, after missing several chances in the past few games, “ head coach Dermot McGrane said. “Overall, it was a good team performance and good win to start the MAAC schedule.”
Niagara (3-6-1, 1-0-0 MAAC) improved to 4-0-1 against Manhattan in its last five games. The first 30 minutes of the match saw end to end action by both teams including forward Carl Haworth (Barrie, Ont.) hitting a venomous shot that smacked off the post in the 21st minute.
Kauble followed with two identical well taken goals in a two minute span. The scoring started in the 24th minute when Kauble placed his one-timer shot in the top corner off a pass from Justin Roundy (Liverpool, N.Y.). In the 26th minute, Haworth distributed the ball to Kauble who finished the same way.
The Purple Eagles added their third goal in the 34th minute when Michael Cunningham (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) pounced on the loose ball in the six yard box off of a free kick.
Levi Tesch (Wolcott, N.Y.) blasted home Niagara’s fourth goal with a 20-yard laser nine minutes into the second half to seal the win. Goalkeeper John Fiutowski (Ottawa, Ont.) made fives saves and recorded his second shutout of the season.
Niagara will face Saint Peter’s at 1 pm on Sunday.
